According to the latest report issued by the Peruvian Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), COVID-19 infections in teenage citizens (aged 12-17) increased by 59% between the first and second week of January 2021.

Via Twitter, Essalud Executive-President Fiorella Molinelli issued a warning concerning the latest figures released by the institution.

Likewise, she noted that contagion among other age groups —which increased above 40% in the same period— are youth (45%) and adults (43%).

In the case of adolescents, 388 infections were registered during the first epidemiological week (January 3 to 9), while in the second week (January 10 to 16) 617 cases were reported, thus meaning an increase of 229.

Meanwhile, youth registered 3,394 new infections in the first week. Later, in the second week, 4,913 new cases were reported (+1,519).

Among adults —the age group that registers the most new cases— 9,984 infections were registered from January 3 to 9, and 14,272 infections from January 10 to 16 (+4,288).

Concern

Dr. Cecilia Bedoya, spokeswoman for Essalud, pointed out that these figures are very worrying because —during the first wave— not many cases had been registered in this segment of the population.

According to the specialist, there are two factors that could explain this increase: On the one hand, the greater transmissibility of the virus, and school holidays which lead to children going out to play with friends —often in crowded public spaces.

"There is an increase in cases in every age group; however, our concern is the group of adolescents, some of whom have even been hospitalized," she concluded.
