COVID-19 cases in Peru continue to decrease compared to the beginning of the pandemic. However, the increase of cases among minors aged between 12 and 17 —who have not been vaccinated yet— is worrisome, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) reported on Saturday.

According to figures by EsSalud's Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit —during the 41st week of the pandemic (October 10-16)— 2,463 new cases were detected in Lima and Callao, of which 6% involved minors.

According to medical opinions, this is due to the fact that teenagers still do not have access to any vaccine against COVID-19.

The opposite effect can be observed in the adult population that has been vaccinated. The number of positive cases has decreased thanks to the uninterrupted immunization process.

65% of hospitalized people not vaccinated

Since the beginning of the vaccination process until end-August 2021, 65% of those hospitalized indicated they had not been immunized.

Likewise, 77% of people —who were hospitalized for over 30 days with any complication— had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

On the other hand, coronavirus infections have gone from 9,500 cases per day to 600, while the number of related deaths decreased from 800 to less than 30 per day.

It should be noted that there are few cases on the beach or in the countryside.

EsSalud is committed to fighting the pandemic with its best human and logistic resources. However, it urges citizens to continue taking care of themselves and not to lower their guard, complying with biosafety measures and getting the vaccine in accordance with the schedule.
