Peru: Coronavirus cases increase to 43

20:37 | Lima, Mar. 14.

The number of citizens infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19) rose to 43 in Peru as at Saturday evening, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has confirmed.

To date, confirmed cases have been reported in the capital city of Lima (37), followed by Arequipa (2), Huanuco (2), Cusco (1), and Ica (1). Other 1,502 samples tested negative for COVID-19.

Via Twitter, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra called on citizens to avoid attending public events, or family-friend reunions with the aim of preventing the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The Health Ministry reiterated that the National Health Institute (INS) is the only official and authorized entity for the processing of samples and the delivery of results in Peru.

Minsa is the official source of authorized information on coronavirus in the South American country. Thus, the content circulating in social media and other unofficial networks should not be deemed as true.

The ministry recommends washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; covering nose and mouth with the forearm or a tissue when coughing or sneezing; avoiding eye, nose, and mouth touching with unwashed hands; and avoiding close contact with people who have respiratory illnesses.

Prevention

Minsa recommends that people should take the following preventive measures:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

• Cover your nose and mouth with your forearm or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
