Peru's Consul General Hernando Torres-Fernández and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón signed a Memorandum of Understanding to efficiently protect the Peruvian community residing in said U.S. city.
The covenant will facilitate the immediate assistance to Peruvian citizens, in case they become victims of
violent or hate crimes or other felonies —such as
human trafficking— regardless of their migratory status.
The MOU implementation will lead to a more fluent and direct communication between the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco and the
District Attorney's Office.
The latter will provide legal advice not only to victims but also to witnesses of crime, who may be reluctant to cooperate with judicial authorities for not holding regular residence permits in the United States.
George Gascón is the District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. He is the first Latino to hold the office in the Western city and the first U.S. police chief to serve in the aforementioned post.
