During a plenary session on Tuesday evening, most Parliament members voted against a motion to start impeachment proceedings against the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo.
76 legislators voted against the motion, whereas 46 voted in favor, and 4 abstained. It was shelved as it needed 52 votes to start impeachment proceedings.
While supporting her motion, Chirinos indicated that this request was intended for the Head of State to attend a Congress session to give explanations regarding some facts deemed by her as causes for presidential vacancy.
Likewise, she called on lawmakers from other parliamentary groups to support this motion.
During the subsequent debate, members of the following parties: Peru Libre, Alianza para el Progreso, Somos Peru, Juntos por el Peru, Accion Popular, and Partido Morado spoke out against the admission of the motion.
For their part, legislators from Fuerza Popular, Avanza Pais, Renovacion Popular, and other parties supported this request.
Once the voting was over, Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva adjourned the plenary session until December 9.
