Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva on Friday met with Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde to analyze the economic situation of Peru.

Both of them agreed that the nation has enormous potential to move forward.

In this sense, the Legislative Branch head emphasized that it is up to President Castillo's administration to adopt the most responsible and prudent measures, which contribute to the stability and good economic management.

Likewise, Alva conveyed to Velarde Congress members' concern about the economic situation affecting Peruvians, especially the most vulnerable citizens.

Furthermore, the dignitary expressed support as Parliament chairwoman, in case he decides to remain leading the issuing entity.

For his part, the BCR head reported that the reason for inflation is temporary, adding that this has occurred in several countries, so it should normalize in the coming months.

Moreover, the economist indicated that the projected growth rate for this year (around 10.5%) should be maintained. In this sense, Velarde assured that he will make efforts to boost the economic reactivation and maintain monetary goals.

On the other hand, the parliamentarian stressed that Congress has the responsibility to comply with and enforce the Constitution, which includes the principle of separation of powers, autonomy, and the strengthening of autonomous bodies such as the BCR.

Article 86 of the Constitution states that the BCR is directed by a board of seven members —four of whom are appointed by the Executive Branch, including the Governor.

Congress ratifies the head of the institution, and also elects the other three directors.
