During a plenary session on Thursday, Congress approved the entry of vehicles, weapons, and military personnel of the United States Navy into Peruvian territory.

Thus, the draft legislative resolution issued by the Executive Branch, requesting the aforementioned authorization, was given the green light.

According to this initiative, the purpose of entry of U.S. military personnel and their equipment is their participation in a multilateral military exercise that will be held at the Port of Callao.

Delegation details

It is a Destroyer-type maritime vessel that carries two helicopters, one submarine, and two aircraft, in addition to the corresponding military personnel, Congressman Jorge Montoya specified.

The Parliament's Defense Commission Secretary was in charge of supporting this initiative.

Military personnel and their ships will remain in Peruvian territorial waters from October 15 to November 1, 2023.

The corresponding exercise will take place from October 20 to 27.

Montoya said that —according to what was indicated by the Executive Branch— the presence of U.S. Navy representatives will not affect sovereignty or territorial integrity, nor will it involve the setting up of a military base on Peruvian soil.

The initiative received 76 votes in favor, 23 against, and four (4) abstentions.
