The Government of Peru —through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— has strongly condemned the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Via social media, the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed firmest rejection of any act of violence and intimidation that affects the development of democracy in this region.

Similarly, the government agency expressed solidarity with the Ecuadorian Government and people, in addition to conveying heartfelt condolences to Villavicencio's relatives and supporters.

Journalist and former assemblyman, Fernando Villavicencio, was assassinated in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, on Wednesday 9.

He was shot by unknown people as he was leaving an electoral rally related to his presidential campaign.

The candidate, who like his contenders had police security, had denounced death threats against him in previous days.

Ecuador has been suffering the worst security and violence crisis, due to organized crime, in its history for just over two years.

It ended 2022 with the highest rate of violent deaths in its history, registering 25.32 per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to the Ecuadorian Government, the large majority of these intentional-scale homicides are linked to organized crime and drug trafficking.
