Machu Picchu District Mayor Elvis La Torre has reported the loss of a commemorative gold plaque and a scroll, which were delivered to local authorities when the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu was declared —in July 2007— one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

"We do not have the gold plaque and the scroll. We will file the corresponding report to determine those responsible," La Torre said.

Moreover, the local authority underscored that the awards are property of the State and Machu Picchu district.

The mayor of Machu Picchu affirmed that his office only contained a silver plaque and that the above-mentioned objects were not handed over to him when he took office, last January.

Consequently, La Torre said he will report the loss to the Attorney General's Office, as it involves State property and the history of Machu Picchu.

In statements to with RPP Noticias, the Machu Picchu mayor indicated that he made the corresponding inquiries to former mayors, and no one knew the location of the plaque and the scroll.

"Absolutely nothing has been transferred, the only object we have is the silver plaque, which is held at the mayor's office," he said.

In this regard, the local authority lamented that Machu Picchu will not be able to show these awards during the activities marking the 16th anniversary of the day the Inca citadel was named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
