18:30 | Lima, Mar. 15.

As of March 15 at 2:00 p.m., 66% of public schools began classes and 88% of teachers started their educational work within the framework of the Good Start of the 2021 School Year in Peru, Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca has reported.

This year, the Good School Start has two characteristics this year.

One of them is the creation of regional intersectoral committees in each region, which will evaluate the epidemiological conditions to determine the eventual return to face-to-face classes.

"What we intend is to implement the return to classrooms in a safe, gradual, flexible, and voluntary way. It is the great objective that we have set, because no matter how many efforts we make for remote education, nothing replaces face-to-face education," he told reporters.

The other characteristic is to deepen the work with teachers and parents given that —between March 15 and April 15— the Education Ministry will make a diagnosis of the learning and emotional situation of schoolchildren.

In that period of time, teachers will make an analysis of the learning situation of students, their cognitive levels, and emotional conditions.

"(…) We have to prepare for virtual education; we have designed a gradual and flexible system, as we learned from the enormous efforts of teachers and parents," he indicated.

According to the Cabinet member, the Aprendo en Casa (I Learn at Home) virtual edition will be launched on April 5, followed by the radio and TV versions on April 19.

He also reminded reporters that the Education Ministry will deliver 1,056,430 tablets to public schools located in the country's poorest areas.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.
