A delegation of four Chinese doctors from Nanfang Hospital arrived in the
on Wednesday to provide technical assistance in the care of coronavirus patients to health personnel at the local COVID-19 hospital.
Arequipa region Governor Elmer Caceres welcomed the medical mission to the metropolis. Following their arrival in the southern city, they visited the hospital where they verified the implementation for the care of COVID-19 patients and held a meeting.
The region's Health sector manager Leonardo Chirinos joined the activities, as did
Honorio Delgado Espinoza Hospital Director Richard Hernandez and Dr. Zulema Anaya from the Ministry of Health.
Chinese doctors shared with the technical team —in charge of treating COVID-19 patients— their experiences in prevention, diagnosis, epidemiological follow-up, control of the pandemic's spread, as well as clinical management of mild, moderate, and severe cases.
In addition, the Chinese experts provided recommendations on therapies, medication, and treatment for COVID-19 patients.
Three basic principles
During the meeting with doctors, the Deputy Director of Nanfang Hospital Medical Department, Guo Yi, pointed out that three basic principles should be applied to combat the coronavirus: diagnosis of COVID-19, patient isolation, and treatment.
He also explained that one of the methods with which the pandemic in China was controlled was to "cut off the sources of contagion," that means to separate infected patients from healthy citizens.
"The best way to prevent the expansion of the coronavirus is to make an early diagnosis of COVID-19 and perform the mandatory isolation of patients," said Guo.
Dr. Guo Yi led the delegation. He was joined by the Director of the Department of Pulmonology and Intensive Care Unit, Liu Laiyu; Deputy Director of the Department of Infectiology, Zhou Hao; and Deputy Director of the Intensive Care Unit at the Department of Neurology, Wu Yongming.
