Peru: Cajamarca's quinoa production grows 10 times with guano from islands

17:01 | Cachachi (Cajamarca region), Sep. 8.

For the past five years, farmers from the Marabamba Alto Producers Association —in Cachachi district of Cajabamba Province (Cajamarca region)— have increased their quinoa production 10 times with the use of guano collected from islands.

"Since the first year that we used guano from islands to fertilize our crops, we noticed that our production has risen significantly. Furthermore, thanks to the nutrients it contains, we have observed an improvement in our sowing soils," said Carlos Medina, a local producer.

"Before using this natural fertilizer, we used to produce 200 kilograms of quinoa per hectare. However, after applying the guano from islands to our crops for five years on an ongoing basis, we were able to produce over two tons per hectare. This allows us to get better opportunities and gain more profitability from our crops," he expressed.

For his part, Agro Rural CEO Angello Tangherlini affirmed that the institution benefits hundreds of farmers in different parts of the country, so that they can achieve higher yields of their crops by strengthening their capacities in the use of guano from islands.

Tangherlini remarked that the institution has several warehouses strategically located across the country in order to supply small-scale farmers, indigenous communities, farmer groups, public institutions, and more.

Agro Rural is the only institution authorized to commercialize guano from islands. Click here to see the points of sale available across the country.
