This expansion has continued steadily in 2026, with seven new products gaining access in just five months to markets such as Argentina, Venezuela, and Costa Rica.
The objective is to safeguard Peru's plant health system and strengthen pest control measures that threaten the competitiveness of domestic producers.
Strategic alliance and biological control
In this regard,
Senasa National Director Vilma Gutarra stressed that the current strategy prioritizes sustainable solutions: today, more than 92,000 hectares already use biological control methods, reducing the use of chemicals.
War against fruit flies
One of the main pillars of the event was the work carried out by the Agrarian Health Committees (Cosagras).
These producer groups showcased the results of integrated fruit fly control, a pest that affects over 200 crop species.
Currently, Senasa monitors more than 1.6 million hectares to protect the livelihoods of 178,000 farming families, the official said.
The event concluded with a firm commitment from all stakeholders in the sector to modernize phytosanitary surveillance and ensure that Peruvian food products continue reaching tables worldwide under the highest health standards.
Workshop conclusions
During the workshop, representatives from the export sector, agribusiness, academia, and regional governments agreed that plant health is a strategic factor in ensuring the competitiveness of Peru's agricultural sector and food security, Senasa indicated.
In this regard, the agency stressed that controlling pests such as fruit flies requires the active participation of small and medium-sized producers, as well as stronger research, monitoring, and controls on high-risk plant material entry.
"Participants agreed that maintaining a strengthened production chain will allow Peru to continue consolidating its position as an agro-export leader, generating jobs and contributing to the reduction of rural poverty," the agency concluded.
