Political, military and ecclesiastical authorities commemorated the 151st anniversary of Battle of Callao: a glorious Peruvian victory over the Spanish fleet in Peru.

The armed conflict occurred on May 2, 1866, when Peruvians defended the Port of Callao from foreign aggression.

The ceremony took place at Callao's Cañon del Pueblo Square, which features a historic canyon used to fight the Spanish fleet.

Navy Commander General Gonzalo Rios Polastri and Callao Vice-Governor Walter Mori laid a wreath at the bust of Colonel Jose Galvez Egusquiza, who died heroically at one of Real Felipe Fortress towers.

Afterwards, historical Juan Fanning battalion paraded before the main stand. This group played a major role in defending Callao's coastline back in 1866.

Other Navy battalions marched past during the two-hour ceremony. Units included Naval Academy cadets and trained marines.
