Peru, Australia to hold next FTA negotiations in Aug 2017

Ministro Eduardo Ferreyros

The next round of negotiations towards a foreign trade agreement (FTA) binding Peru and Australia is due to be held in August this year, Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry announced.

"We have made tremendous progress, and the next round of negotiations will take place in August," Minister Eduardo Ferreyros informed.

"Peru and Australia are open economies that promote international trade. We are complementary economies, and this facilitates the negotiation process," he pointed out.

As is known, both Pacific nations held the first round of FTA negotiations on July 5-7.

The government official explained the talks cover bilateral accords inked earlier this year.

"All of these agreements […] will bring us closer together," Ferreyros was quoted as saying.

Said view was echoed by Australian Ambassador to Peru Nicholas McCaffrey, who underlined the positive atmosphere between both negotiating teams during the first round.

"This round has been a first step towards a comprehensive, high-quality FTA, which will take bilateral trade to a whole new level. I am hopeful that the FTA will be a major step towards a broader and more mature bilateral relation," he said.

Remarks were made within the framework of an Australia Business Network (ABN) event held July 12.

The activity was organized by the Peruvian Australian Chamber of Commerce and the Australian Embassy in Lima.
