Peru: Armed Forces to guarantee security for COVID-19 vaccination

The Armed Forces are in charge of ensuring security for the distribution of vaccines against COVID-19, Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces Major General Cesar Astudillo affirmed on Thursday.

The task, he stressed, includes the arrival of doses, transportation, and the vaccination process itself.

"Rest assured that we will use all our logistics, stipulated by the Ministry of Defense, through the Armed Forces," Astudillo said in remarks to the press.

These efforts are part of the strategy run by the Ministry of Health to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purchase

Last Wednesday, the President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti announced that the purchase of a batch of 38 million vaccine doses from China's Sinopharm laboratory is completed.

A purchase agreement and a letter of commitment have been signed with said laboratory that will allow a first shipment (one million doses) to be received in January.

According to the statesman, between 14 and 15 million citizens are expected to be vaccinated before the winter begins in Peru this June.

Peru has also signed a purchase agreement with AstraZeneca for the delivery of 14 million doses starting September, although steps are being taken to advance the shipments.
