Peru: Armed Forces officers prepare to join UN peacekeeping missions

The Training Center for Peace Operations (CECOPAZ) —attached to Peru's Defense Ministry— has successfully closed the 3rd Course for United Nations General Staff Officers aimed at Armed Forces officers who are preparing to take part in UN peacekeeping missions.

The ceremony was held at the entity facilities in Lima's Chorrillos district last Wednesday. It saw the presence of Director General of Education and Doctrine at the Defense Ministry, Brigade General Mario Risco, and CECOPAZ Director, Peruvian Army Colonel Jose Celi.

The representative of the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Jay Richardson, and French Military Attaché to Peru, Army Colonel Pierre Bern, also participated in the course.

The aforementioned event saw the participation of 21 officers —a group made up of 10 men and 11 women.

For five weeks they received instruction and training on different specialties, such as protection of civilians; security risk management and advanced life support; Security Council mandates; role of a General Staff officer; as well as on women, peace, and security.

Training under the demands and standards of the United Nations enables officers to rely on the skills required to be deployed on peacekeeping missions.

They were also taught the survival French language, led by instructors from CECOPAZ.
