Peru: Archaeologists to protect heritage at Dakar Rally 2019

14:43 | Lima, Dec. 28.

Peru's Culture Ministry will mobilize 121 archaeologists to protect archaeological and paleontological sites during Dakar Rally 2019, which will entirely take place in the Inca country on January 6-17, Culture Minister Rogers Valencia informed Friday.

Within this framework, 50 archaeologists from Cusco will participate in the task. They will be joined by specialists from Lambayeque and La Libertad regions, as well as researchers from the regions where the Dakar will be held (Arequipa, Ica, Tacna, and Moquegua)

Likewise, the official indicated 141 people from other institutions will be in charge of controlling the presence of spectators at the 17 areas available for attendees to watch the race.

"It will be a sustainable Dakar (Rally) that will guarantee the conservation of archaeological and paleontological heritage," Minister Valencia affirmed.

The General Directorate of Intangible Archaeological Heritage will create an action plan to safeguard archaeological evidence in those regions.

Furthermore, the public will be informed about the protected areas so that the people interested are able to visit those places without damaging the Inca nation's cultural heritage.

Dakar

As is known, the Dakar Rally had left the African continent for security reasons, which led to the cancellation of its 2008 edition.

Since 2009, this competition has been held in South America.

It must be noted this marks the first time in history the Dakar Rally will be exclusively run in one country.
