08:49 | Lima, Jul. 20.

The Peruvian Government on Tuesday announced that it has signed an agreement with a subsidiary of the Russian Direct Investment Fund for the supply of Sputnik V vaccines to immunize 10 million Peruvians with two doses.

A statement issued this morning by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) indicates that the agreement will enable the delivery of 10 million treatments in the coming months (each treatment consists of two different components).

"The Government of Peru is pleased to announce the signing of the Sputnik V vaccine supply agreement with Human Vaccine LLC, a subsidiary of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF)," the statement reads.

The statement said that the doses of the Russian vaccine will directly benefit the population in the context of the current health emergency caused by COVID-19, which so far has claimed more than 195,000 lives in Peru.

In a video message posted on Twitter, President Francisco Sagasti explained that the agreement is for 20 million doses, which will serve to immunize 10 million Peruvians.

"Thus, an additional 10 million Peruvians can get fully vaccinated," he stated.

According to Minsa, 10,890,737 jabs have been administered so far. Of the total, 6,860,253 were for the first dose, while 4,030,484 were second dose jabs.
