The launching ceremony of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and Japan (1873-2023) was held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry headquarters in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Thursday.

The event —the first among various commemorative activities to be held this year— was attended by some legislators, members of the Peru-Japan Parliamentary League; senior officials from various State agencies; Nikkei community representatives; diplomatic corps members; in addition to senior executives of Peruvian and Japanese companies.

The Peruvian deputy minister and the Japanese envoy highlighted the historical relationship between both countries, as well as the interest in continuing to deepen the friendship and cooperation relations.

Ambassador Higueras stressed that Japan is our fourth-largest trading partner and one of our main investors.

The Peruvian diplomat highlighted the importance of Japan's technical cooperation and thanked the Asian country for its solidarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Similarly, the government official underscored the valuable contribution of the Nikkei community in the construction of Peruvian society in aspects such as industry, natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and gastronomy.

On this occasion, both authorities unveiled the commemorative logo for the 150th anniversary and inaugurated a documentary exhibit on the history of the bilateral relationship, highlighting —among others— the exhibition of the "Preliminary Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation" original volume.

The document, through which diplomatic relations between the two countries were established, was signed in Tokyo on August 21, 1873.
