The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representative in the country, Federico Luis Agusti, reported that Peru is among the five countries that receive the most refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants in the world.

According to the UNHCR's Global Trends report, Peru is among the five countries that receive the most refugees in the world, hosting 1.3 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants, along with Turkey (3.8 million), Colombia (1.8 million), Uganda (1.5 million), and Pakistan (1.4 million).

"Nowadays, Peru faces a situation that has global impact and scale. Peru has hosted 1.3 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants, and nearly half a million have sought international protection," Agusti told Andina News Agency.

He explained that Peru is a very receiving country, but when mass exodus occurs took place, as in the case of Venezuela, this brings some fears among the population.

"It is important to continue to co-operate with authorities to work on that union, and above all, on social inclusion," he said on the occasion of the World Refugee Day.

On the other hand, he reported that, by the end of 2021 those displaced worldwide stood at 89.3 million, and that 1% of the world's population is now forcibly displaced.

Regarding those who have been displaced as a result of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, he said they are not included in the UNHCR's Global Trends report.

However, if they were added to the number of people displaced in the first 6 months of the year, the figure would stand at more than 100 million people.
