Peru is among the top 14 countries in the world hosting more than 89.4% of their target population (32,781,250) vaccinated with the first dose against COVID-19, according to government data compiled by the University of Oxford's Our World in Data project, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Tuesday.

This way, Peru's progress in its vaccination process during the fight against the pandemic is highlighted compared to other countries.

Similarly, with a percentage of 83.1% of administration of the second dose against coronavirus, the international project places Peru in 22nd position worldwide and among the first 34 countries that administer third and fourth doses against the virus.

Out of that total, 27,235,137 were given as second dose, thus accounting for 83.1% of the target population.

Within this framework, 17,251,150 citizens have been vaccinated with a third dose. They also account for 60.4% of the general population, the leading government authority in the health sector said in its daily report.

Similarly, 662,868 people have received the fourth dose.

Doses and minors

The third dose is applied differently. In minors over 12 years of age, these are administered 5 months after having applied the second dose, while the population over 18 years of age receives it only 3 months later.

Meanwhile, the fourth dose is applied 5 months after the third dose against COVID-19 was administered. In the latter group, doses from Pfizer and Moderna are used for inoculation purposes.

Each minor must be accompanied by an adult relative, who will be in charge of signing the informed consent before the underage person receives both doses recommended for this age group.

"The progress of vaccination is very important; that is why we invite the population not to lower their guard so as to complete their vaccine (doses) against COVID-19 because the pandemic is not over," said
Minsa's Immunizations Director Maria Elena Martinez.

Areas

In Peru, Tumbes, Ica, Lima Provinces, and Northern Lima Norte are among the first regions that have managed to administer first doses to at least 95% of their target population.

For their part, Ica, Lima Provinces, and Callao are among the first three regions that exceed 90% of their population vaccinated with two doses against COVID-19.
