Peru agrees to boost four power transmission projects worth US$339 million

16:00 | Lima, Oct. 6.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) participated in the ceremony marking the closing and signing of concession agreements with Engie Transmision Peru S.A. for the implementation of four power transmission projects that are part of the 2025–2034 Transmission Plan's Group 1. The projects represent an investment of US$339 million.

According to Minem, the implementation of these four projects will benefit more than 1.6 million residents in Piura, Lambayeque, Junin, and Ayacucho regions.

The signing of these agreements, through the State-run Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion), formalizes the completion of the promotion and award process.

This allows work to move forward on major projects aimed at strengthening the South American country's power transmission infrastructure and meeting the current and future needs of the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN).

The projects are as follows: the 500 kV Miguel Grau–Pariñas Link and Pariñas 500/220 kV Substation, expansions, and associated substations; the 220 kV Felam–Tierras Nuevas–Salitral Links, expansions, and associated substations; the New Palian 220/60 kV Substation and associated links; and the 220 kV Muyurina–Mollepata Link, expansions, and associated substations.

During the ceremony, Deputy Electricity Minister Luis Santillan highlighted that the signing of these agreements represents an important step toward developing strategic infrastructure that will improve the power system's reliability and support growing energy demand in various Peruvian regions.

"With the signing of these agreements, we are taking a concrete step toward implementing projects that will strengthen our transmission infrastructure, enhance the reliability of the electricity supply, and enable us to promptly meet the needs of the population and productive activities," he indicated.

It should be noted that the Miguel Grau–Pariñas project will help increase the power system's reliability in Piura and Tumbes, while also expanding the capacity to transmit electricity generated from Renewable Energy Resources (RER), mainly wind power, in the Pariñas area.

Likewise, the Felam–Tierras Nuevas–Salitral and New Palian Substation projects will strengthen the transmission systems in Lambayeque and Junin, respectively. Meanwhile, the Muyurina–Mollepata Link project will enhance the reliability of power transmission in Ayacucho, helping ensure adequate operating conditions in the event of contingencies.

Santillan said Minem is working on regulatory changes aimed at creating increasingly attractive conditions for investment in the sector, both from technical and environmental aspects.

The ceremony was also attended by ProInversion Executive President Luis Del Carpio; Chamber of Deputies' Commission on Economy, Banking, Finance, and Financial Intelligence Chairman Jose Marcelo Salazar; Deputy Communications Minister Dalia Miroslava Suarez; Deputy Construction and Sanitation Minister Carlos Lezameta; and concessionaire representatives.

Thus, Minem reaffirms its commitment to fostering the development of strategic power infrastructure by encouraging investments that strengthen the SEIN, enhance the quality and reliability of electricity supply, and contribute to the sustainable development of various Peruvian regions.
