Peru: 1,800 indigenous people receive 18 tons of food through Qali Warma

The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), through the national school feeding program Qali Warma, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, delivered 18 tons of quality and safe products to 1,800 indigenous people in Amazon basins.

The beneficiaries are housed in educational institutions named No. 61004 and Simon Bolivar, located in the rainforest city of Iquitos (Loreto region). 

Members of indigenous peoples matses, yagua, bora, kichwa, among others, were in transit in Iquitos when the national health emergency kicked off and remain in said city complying with the mandatory social isolation declared by the Government before continuing their return journey to their native communities. 

The delivery takes place within the framework of Legislative Decree No. 1472, which authorizes Qali Warma to purchase and deliver food at the request of district municipalities, ministries, and the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) by expanding its coverage to include people in vulnerable conditions as part of the health emergency caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The distribution is carried out through the municipalities and sectors that require so. This request was made by the Ministry of Culture.

The delivered foodstuffs include noodles, rice, legumes, beans, milk, sugar, canned fish chunks in vegetable oil products, oil, among others, which will be received, prepared, distributed, and consumed by the indigenous population.
