The 153 top athletes making up "Top Peru 2019" will get an extraordinary grant from the Government as part of their preparation prior to the Pan American and Parapan American Games in Lima.

Those with chances to medal in the Games will enroll in more international competitions and get additional training bases.

Moreover, they will get additional financial resources through the Athlete Support Program (PAD) and enjoy better training conditions so as to make it to Lima 2019.

Following the program's launch, Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) head Oscar Fernandez thanked President Kuczynski for the support on behalf of the sports community and IPD.

"For years, we've been waiting for this aid, which was made possible thanks to our leader who understands athletes' needs. We are convinced Lima 2019 will change the history of sports in Peru," he affirmed.

The Peruvian Government, through IPD, transferred S/36 million (about US$11.09 million) as an extraordinary budget to back the preparation of sportsmen and women this year.

The sum will benefit about 700 Peruvian athletes who will compete in the Pan American and Parapan American Games, mainly those comprising Top Peru 2019.

On Friday, the statesman took part in the presentation of Top Peru 2019, an initiative that brings together the most talented national athletes who will represent the Andean country during the said sports event.

The group comprises men and women with remarkable performances at the Olympic Games, the Pan American Games, the Bolivarian Games, the South American Games and the World Cups.

Emphasis was placed on 18 out of 39 sports and 4 out of 18 Pan American disciplines.

Top Peru 2019 gathers athletes from different disciplines: athletics, badminton, bowling, equestrian, fencing, water skiing, gymnastics, judo, karate, weightlifting, amateur wrestling, para-powerlifting, para-athletics, para-badminton, para-cycling, rowing, squash, surfing, taekwondo, shooting, sailing and volleyball.

Nominated by different sports associations in the country, beneficiaries can be changed or added at any time as long as they deliver superlative performance.
