The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) on Monday reported that the United States has excluded 100 Peruvian agricultural products from the list of reciprocal tariffs, allowing them to enter that market with zero tariffs.

"Unilaterally, the United States has exempted tariffs on 237 products worldwide. In our case, 100 products benefit from this liberalization," Minister Teresa Mera emphasized on TVPeru.

It is worth noting that the U.S. government had imposed a 10% tariff on the products Peru exports to the North American country.

Thus, those 100 Peruvian products will once again enjoy a 0% tariff, as they previously did under the bilateral trade agreement.

Which products are included?

Minister Mera detailed that among the 100 exempted products are avocados, coffee, cacao, citrus fruits (lemons, tangerines, and oranges), mangoes, ginger, and orange juice, among others.

"These are products that hold great importance in our agricultural export basket," she noted.

The high-ranking official clarified that blueberries are not included on this list, which could be explained by the fact that the United States also produces this fruit.

"However, the sensitivity of this product has not been determined, given that it is off-season," she said.

Export basket

Minister Mera emphasized that these 100 products exempted from tariffs account for 24% of Peru's export basket to the United States.

"Specifically with these products, shipments to the United States so far this year total around US$1.2 billion," she stated.

In fact, the Cabinet member commented that fine aromatic cacao is one of the products that has benefited the most from this measure, as trade with the U.S. has increased.

The Mincetur's head highlighted that, while the United States is our third-largest trading partner in the world, it is the primary destination for our non-traditional products, that is, those with added value.
