The new
Permanent Representative of Peru to UNESCO, Carlos Diaz Villanueva, has presented his credentials to the
Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Audrey Azoulay.
During the audience, held last Friday, both authorities reviewed the main topics of interest on the Peruvian agenda at UNESCO.
Moreover, the Director-General highlighted the important role that Peru plays in the field of culture in said global institution.
In this regard, the senior official referred to the next meeting of the Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which will be held in Botswana next December, where —she said— Peru's file linked to ceviche may be approved.
For his part, the Permanent Representative agreed with the Director-General, noting that the Peruvian file had received excellent reviews from the evaluation body of the 2003 Convention, so there was great expectation in the country.
The Peruvian delegate stated that its inscription would have a significant impact on the unity of the nation, adding that it was not only positive for Peru, but also for Latin America as a whole, since it paves the way for other regional gastronomy files to be inscribed on the UNESCO representative list.
On the other hand, Diaz Villanueva highlighted the boost that Peru seeks to give to other UNESCO's topics such as those linked to natural sciences, especially the issue of water, biosphere reserves, or ocean sciences.
On the other hand, Peru's active participation in the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme and in the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission was also highlighted.
Finally, the Permanent Representative invited Audrey Azoulay to visit Peru as part of her agenda for next year.
