Over 70 Shining Path and Movadef members captured in Peru

More than 70 alleged members of the terrorist organization Shining Path were captured on Wednesday in a mega-operation carried out by the National Police of Peru, with the support of Public Ministry representatives, General Commander of the National Police of Peru (PNP) Cesar Cervantes reported.

Among those arrested are members of pro-terrorist group Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef) and other groups linked to the terrorist organization.

For example, the persons under arrest include former inmates belonging to Shining Path, such as Fernando Olortegui and Victor Castillo, as well as to the Frente Unido (United Front) of said terrorist group.

The list also includes Evalisa Cano, a member of the Movadef Base in Downtown Lima, and Carlos Cano Andia, a member of the Eastern Detachment of the Popular Guerrilla Army.

The mega-operation Olimpo was led by the Anti-Terrorism Division (Dircote), the High Complexity Investigations Division (Diviac), the Peruvian Army Intelligence Directorate, and the Third Supraprovincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office.

In statements to Latina TV channel, Cervantes reported that 71 people have been arrested so far. 

"It has been a long-term work based on police intelligence," he said.

The operation included the participation of 1,200 police officers, as well as 98 representatives of the Prosecutor's Office.
