The Health Ministry (Minsa) has reported that 1,908,100 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from China's Sinopharm laboratory landed in Peru last Friday —the first batch of over 8 million vaccines that will arrive in the coming days.

Health Minister Hernando Cevallos said this is the first batch from direct purchase made by the Peruvian Government.

Besides, 1,000,000 doses donated by the Chinese Government are expected to arrive in the near future.

"This number of vaccines is important so as to strengthen the work being carried out in regions, particularly in the most remote areas we reach out to thanks to the efforts undertaken by healthcare professionals," he pointed out.

In this sense, the high-ranking official highlighted that Minsa devised a strategy aimed at reinforcing regional governments' work.

"The vaccination process will continue across the country this weekend, and I want to invite everyone, who has not protected themselves, to do so because the vaccine is life," Cevallos added.

Donation from Spain

A second batch of vaccines —79,200 AstraZeneca doses— donated by the Spanish Government through the COVAX Facility mechanism arrived in Peru last night.

The minister thanked the gesture and support from the European country.

"This significant support allows us to continue adding (efforts) aimed at closing gaps," he expressed.
On his part, Spanish Ambassador Alejandro Alvargonzalez stressed that his country will continue supporting Peru on sanitary matters.
