Outstanding Editora Peru journalist Azucena Romani Tafur passes away

18:41 | Lima, May. 14.

Azucena Romani Tafur, a 59-year-old journalist from Peru's Andina News Agency, died on Thursday at a Lima-based clinic from respiratory failure and pneumonia linked to COVID-19.

As a local news section writer, Romani Tafur worked for the last 13 years at the State-run company Editora Peru —which owns Andina News Agency, the Official Gazette El Peruano, and Segraf.

Previously, she worked for the newspapers Correo and La Republica, among other media outlets.

Once the state of emergency was declared in mid-March, the journalist began to work from home under the remote work modality due to her health condition and in accordance with the company's internal regulations.

Editora Peru mourns the death of Romani Tafur and sends its heartfelt condolences to her relatives and its full support at these difficult times.

Editor-in-Chief Felix Paz Quiroz expressed his deepest sympathy following the departure of Romani Tafur and recalled that they had first met during electoral coverage in the early 1990s.

"Azucena was always frontal and direct. She was a person of great sensitivity when writing her journalistic stories, which was reflected in the chronicles she published in Andina and El Peruano (…)," he said.

People knew of her unconditional love for pets and her strong defense of animal rights, so much so that she sought help to make possible the adoption or feeding of abandoned animals.

Colleagues from Editora Peru and other institutions have expressed their condolences after learning of her sudden departure.

Congress' virtual plenary session held a minute of silence for the passing away of Romani Tafur.
