Azucena Romani Tafur, a 59-year-old journalist from
, died on Thursday at a Lima-based clinic from respiratory failure and pneumonia linked to COVID-19.
Previously, she worked for the newspapers Correo and La Republica, among other media outlets.

Editor-in-Chief Felix Paz Quiroz expressed his deepest sympathy following the departure of Romani Tafur and recalled that they had first met during electoral coverage in the early 1990s.
"Azucena was always frontal and direct. She was a person of great sensitivity when writing her journalistic stories, which was reflected in the chronicles she published in Andina and El Peruano (…)," he said.
People knew of her unconditional love for pets and her strong defense of animal rights, so much so that she sought help to make possible the adoption or feeding of abandoned animals.

Congress' virtual plenary session held a minute of silence for the passing away of Romani Tafur.
