What are the 2023 complementary municipal elections?

According to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), this is an electoral process that was called through Supreme Decree 001-2023-PCM after declaring the 2022 municipal elections null in 12 districts across the country, according to Resolution 4204-2022-JNE.

Why were the municipal elections annulled in those 12 districts?

According to Article 36 of Municipal Election Law, there causes were identified:

- Null or blank votes, counted together or separately, exceeded two-thirds of the number of votes cast.
- Absence of more than 50% of voters.
- The existence of serious irregularities was confirmed, due to infringement of the law, which modified the results of the voting.
