Peruvian authorities are strongly committed to their country's process of accession to the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Deputy Secretary General of said institution,
Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen, said on Wednesday.
After a meeting with the
President of the Republic Pedro Castillo at the Government Palace in Lima, Knudsen affirmed that he is confident Peru will become a valuable member of the OECD, taking into account the will observed.
From now on, he explained, the accession process advances to a more technical stage, in which Peru will undergo reviews by 24 OECD committees.
According to the OECD official, this is a historic opportunity for Peru to carry out reforms in health, education, and the fight against corruption, so as to improve the situation of its inhabitants, and thereby join an organization with broad respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The deputy secretary general urged Peruvian authorities to help and work together in the aforementioned OECD accession process.
When asked about the length of time that the process may take, he said that it will depend on the compliance with the requirements of the 24 committees, but traditionally it lasts from three to seven years.
Moreover, Knudsen remarked that political instability itself is not a factor of delay, but matters that deviate from constitutionality or legality are.
