OAS Secretary-General voices support for implementation of political agenda in Peru

12:45 | Washington D.C. (U.S.), Sep. 20.

The Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, has expressed permanent support from the OAS —to the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo— for the implementation of the political stability agenda in the country, as well as the fight against corruption and for the rights of peoples.

Almagro affirmed that he is convinced that Mr. Castillo's experience will allow him to govern a heterogeneous and diverse country like Peru, making sure that all citizens achieve development, but above all, ensuring that no one is left behind.

"We give you the warmest welcome to the House of the Americas, as well as the permanent support to implement your political stability agenda, the permanent support in the fight against corruption, and the permanent support to let people know that rights of peoples are all constitutional rights," he expressed.

In addition, the OAS Secretary-General underscored that President Castillo represents the deepest corners of Peru, of its communities and peoples, which have to overcome many obstacles to access rights and development.

"Peoples to which we are indebted, where several rights are pending, peoples in the most unequal continent in the world," he remarked.

Moreover, Almagro highlighted the trust that Peruvians have placed in Pedro Castillo to occupy the highest office in Peru, a country, which —he said— has contributed in an exemplary manner to the strengthening of the OAS, since its establishment.

The head of the OAS affirmed that he paid attention to the Peruvian President's inaugural speech, in which he noted that this was the first time that the country would be governed by a peasant.

On the matter, the OAS official believes that this experience is key to look at and understand the land and its people, as well as their view of environment, climate change, and food sovereignty.

Remarks were made on Monday morning in the Session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. (U.S.).
