From January to December 2007, the number of robberies committed against foreign tourists after leaving Jorge Chavez International Airport has decreased in 70 percent compared with 2006, announced Peru’s police chief César Fourmen.

He detailed that last year only 13 robberies were registered on Faucett and La Marina Avenues, which connect Jorge Chavez Airport to the city. In most of the cases, robbers use a spark plug to smash car windows and steal cell phones, wallets and other items.

“Last year’s numbers are lower than those reported in 2006 when 44 robberies were committed against foreign tourists on the main avenues connecting the city to the air terminal”, stated the police authority to Andina news agency.

“This significant decrease is due to police efforts which are also focus on ensuring visitors’ safety during the two international summits to be held in our country throughout the year”, he added.

Fourmen Paredes pointed out that most of the tourists who were robbed in Lima are from the United States, followed by visitors coming from the United Kingdom, Israel, France, Australia, Canada and Spain. Regarding latin Americans, Brazilians and Argentineans represent the majority of people who were victims of robbery.
