There are no reports of Peruvians among the injured and dead following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck early Monday across the border region between Turkey and Syria and that has left 2,349 dead and thousands of buildings destroyed.

The information was provided by Peruvian Ambassador to Turkey, Cesar de las Casas, after noting that there are 207 Peruvian nationals residing in said country, although not in the area impacted by the seismic event, but in other cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Bursa.

However, he said, there are eight Peruvians registered in the affected area, but none of them has been harmed.

"We have contacted them via e-mail or by phone. We were worried about one fellow citizen, but she finally replied and informed us that she was on vacation," the Peruvian envoy said in statements to Canal N.

According to de las Casas, two Peruvians are serving a sentence at a prison located in the region where the quake hit; nevertheless, the penal institution has reported that prisoners at this prison are in good condition.

It should be noted that the epicenter of the earthquake, situated in the southeast region on the border with Syria, is located some 600 kilometers from the capital Ankara, where the Peruvian Embassy is based, that is, some eight or ten hours from there by car.

For its part, via social media, the Consular Section of the Peruvian Embassy in Turkey has set up emergency communication channels following the strong quake that occurred early Monday, February 6.

Thus, Peruvians in the affected areas can call the Peruvian Embassy at +90 (553) 041 08 85 or send an e-mail to consulado@embassyofperu.org.tr.

"The Consular Section of the Peruvian Embassy in Türkiye is on permanent alert. In the face of any difficulty, the Peruvian nationals can contact through the following channels," the government agency said in the tweet.
