Almost 60,000 members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) have so far received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Lima, Callao, and Arequipa, Interior Minister Jose Elice reported on Sunday.

According to the government official, the inoculation of retired police staff will start on March 22.

"Nearly 60,000 police members must have been vaccinated at this point. First, we proceeded to vaccinate the active personnel in Lima, Callao, and Arequipa, and the process will gradually extend across the country," he explained.

For its part, the Police Health Unit stated that the inoculation of the first group of retired police staff will be conducted over three consecutive days, adding that the vaccine will be administered to those aged 69 and over.

People who are part of this first group must go to one of the 10 vaccination centers set up by the PNP on their own or accompanied by a relative.

If all goes as planned, 4,296 retired police members will be vaccinated on Monday (March 22), a similar number of people will receive the vaccine on Tuesday, while 4,276 will be inoculated on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the minister highlighted the launch of the program "Improving Emotional Health of Police Personnel" by the Lima Police Region, which seeks to optimize the physical and mental health of PNP agents who have been fighting on the frontline of the battle against COVID-19.

Observing health protocols and social distancing, the government official participated this weekend in a motivational talk by specialized staff aimed at 150 police officers from different units.
