More than a hundred experts from all over the world will take part in three international anti-corruption meetings in Lima in the coming days. The aim is to define more effective concrete actions to prevent and combat this scourge on a regional and global scale.
According to Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio, the first meeting —with representatives of countries in the Western Hemisphere region— will take place on November 28 and seeks a mechanism to effectively implement the 57 mandates contained in the
Lima Commitment "Democratic Governance against Corruption," adopted at the 8th Summit of the Americas.
This mechanism will make citizens aware of the progress made by each State in meeting their commitments to access to information, political parties' financing, transparency in public works, asset recovery, as well as measures against domestic and international bribery, among others.
"Its adoption will send a clear signal that governments in the region have introduced a zero tolerance policy against corruption and of how committed we are to cooperating in these cases that constitute threats to the democracy, rule of law, and development of our populations," the government official remarked.
The second meeting —sponsored by the United Nations (UN), as well as Peru and Norway governments— will be held on December 3-5 and will bring together about one hundred experts from Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.
This gathering is intended to develop effective measures to investigate and prosecute corruption cases involving large amounts of assets.
This special day was set by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of States working together to combat this scourge.
