Unesco Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris announced the completion of technical procedures for future inclusion of La Huaconada –a ritual dance currently performed in the town of Mito- in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to Cecile Duvelle, chief of Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Section, the dossier will be submitted for review to the Intergovernmental Committee.
The members of this committee will convene in closed session next May to decide whether or not the Peruvian dance qualified for nomination. Once results are obtained, the decision will be made public.
La Huaconada is a celebration that parodies justice in Mito, a village in the Mantaro valley. Visitors and tourists dance with the huaynos music, and they go around the whole village.
It was declared National Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Culture (INC), through Resolution No. 925-INC-2003 on December 23, 2003.
