Five years from now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing will account for more than 80% of all the computing power we use around the world, according to a Huawei study. This is the reason why the Chinese company will bet on connectivity and computing for its AI development strategy.
The announcement was made by Huawei Deputy Chairman Ken Hu at the
2019 Huawei Connect —an annual flagship event held in Shanghai, China from September 18 to 20.
Hu explained that if you want to train an algorithm to recognize a cat, you will need to feed it millions of images and let the system come to its own conclusions about what exactly defines cat-ness. This takes a metric ton of computing power. More complicated applications like autonomous driving, astronomy, and weather forecasting will take even more compute.
He went on to say that
Huawei's goal is to build an intelligent world, both connections and computing are key.
The strategy focuses on four areas. First, the company developed its Da Vinci architecture, the only processor architecture in the world that can support all-scenario intelligence across device, edge, and cloud, and it will pave the way for future growth in the computing industry.
Second, Huawei will invest in all-scenario processors. "Processors are the basic building block of the computing industry (...) Moving forward we will release more processors for different scenarios."
Both ideas are reflected in the business strategy. "To start with, we won't sell our processors directly. Broadly speaking, we will provide them to our customers in the form of cloud services, and to our partners in the form of components, prioritizing support for integrated solutions," he added.
Additionally, Hu announced Huawei's software will be open source.
Finally, the company will build an open ecosystem. Huawei has made great progress since it announced its Program Developer Program back in 2015, thus empowering more than 1.3 million developers and 14,000 ISVs around the world.
"Moving forward we will invest another US$1.5 billion dollars in our dev program. We want to expand the program to five million developers and better enable our partners around the world to develop the next generation of intelligent applications and solutions," he stated.
