The Huascaran National Park in Ancash region welcomed more than 181,000 domestic and foreign tourists in 2014, posting a 22% surge from the previous year, reported the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp).
In 2013, the park drew 141,000 travelers, which means there have been an additional 40,000 visits to the site last year, informed Sernanp’s head Pedro Gamboa.
“We believe this is due to the good state of conservation and to the fact that the infrastructure is being improved and new tourist routes are being created,” he added.
It should be noted a climate change tourist route has been implemented in partnership with local governments and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism. This initiative is aimed at helping visitors appreciate the global warming consequences from an educational perspective.
"This route used to be covered by snow, but you will be able to observe the consequences of climate change there,” Gamboa was quoted as saying by state news agency Andina.
