Holy Week: Get to know Caral, the oldest civilization in Peru

18:06 | Lima, Mar. 28.

If you don't have fixed travel plans for the four-day-long weekend of Holy Week (March 29- April 1), pick Caral —a great option to understand the origins of Peruvians and enjoy Supe Valley's natural beauty.

Located four hours away from the capital city Lima, Caral provides a journey through the origins of Peruvian culture.

The area contains pyramids, archaeological remains, the Supe Valley, the Huarango Forest, and agro-ecological orchards.

Visitors can enjoy the designated camping areas or procure accommodation in nearby towns.

Activities in Caral

The Sacred City of Caral will be lit up to welcome its visitors this Friday, March 30, as part of the celebrations of Holy Week.

The initiative is run within the framework of the Second Tinkuy (Meeting) scheduled for March 30 and 31.

Long weekend campers and visitors to Caral will be able to enjoy the event.

Visitors can interact with Caral civilization characters starting Friday.

Other tourist-aimed facilities include the Interpretation Center, as well as the Andean Science and Technology Tunnel.

Get ready to walk and take the Huarango Forest tour —a special activity for visitors coming on these dates—, and don't miss Catu Caral —a space for traditional dishes and local products.

Painting, ceramic, and origami workshops will be available for children and adults as well.

In the evening, people will be invited to take walks through the ancient site in order to enjoy the lights and its breathtaking view. Caral civilization characters will turn up on the way to provide details of the oldest civilization in the Americas.

The day will come to an end with a bonfire featuring Literature House's storytellers willing to recover our ancestors' oral tradition.

Aspero

The next day includes a 45-min trip to Aspero —Caral civilization's fishing town— where beautiful beaches, the Faraon Island, and the Supe Community Museum wait for you.

Vichama

The ancient agro-fishing town of Vichama is on the way to Lima —located 30 minutes from Aspero.

Vichama showcases urban architectural infrastructures featuring the area's social organization and religious beliefs.

Three non-fired clay sculptures were found at the place back in 2015. They were described as one of the greatest discoveries of the year by the National Geographic Society.

It must be noted the three spots (Caral, Aspero, and Vichama) provide adequate facilities for holidaymakers, including ticket offices, parking, restrooms, dining areas, craft booths, souvenir shops, and interpretation centers.

Visit routes have been implemented at each place.
