Health Ministry monitors regions in central Peru due to increase in COVID-19 cases

19:06 | Lima, Dec. 14.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) is monitoring regions in central Peru due to the increase in COVID-19 cases reported in recent weeks, said National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) Director Luis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez reported that regions such as Huanuco have experienced a steady increase in recent weeks, while Pasco, Apurimac, and Huancavelica have seen a rise and then a decline in the number of cases. A similar situation was observed in Ayacucho.

On Saturday, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti announced that Minsa will send teams of experts to strengthen the prevention of COVID-19 in central Peru, where an increase of cases has been reported.

Minsa and the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) sent health brigades to Piura and Ica last week in order to strengthen health care and prevention during the pandemic.

In the case of Piura, a multidisciplinary team from the Ministry of Health reviewed the measures to improve the strategy to fight the novel coronavirus.

In this regard, Rodriguez affirmed that a study determined that the increase of cases in Piura was seen in urban areas and in rural districts near the cities.

In statements to Andina news agency, the expert commented that such growth in cases could be explained by the period of tremendous business activity and high mobilization of people.
