The reduction in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths for four weeks in a row reflects the end of the pandemic's third wave in Peru, Executive Director of Public Health Surveillance at the Ministry of Health (Minsa) Cesar Munayco said on Monday.

"The number (of cases) has been below the expected number, between the second and third waves, for four weeks. Moreover, this is the first week that the number of deaths is below the expected number," Munayco remarked.

"This indicates that the third wave is already coming to an end," he emphasized.

Likewise, he highlighted that a significant decrease in the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 has been noticed in the last six weeks.

"Bed occupancy is around 31%, and ICU bed occupancy is around 11%," Munayco stated.

However, he noted that said figures should not be a barrier to continue complying with preventive measures so as to avoid the risk of COVID-19 infection.

"Because when we get to this situation, after more than two years of pandemic, we obviously get tired of restrictions, but that can also make us take decisions that are not smart," he added.

For this reason, he insisted on the need to continue the preventive biosafety measures, as well as the vaccination against COVID-19, given the risk that a fourth wave of the pandemic could occur in the country.
