Four Ychsma culture mummies — three women and one man— were unearthed by a team of archaeologists at Huaca Pucllana, an ancient ceremonial complex in Lima, Peru.

The discovery reaffirms the presence of Ychsma groups at the site. Such culture settled on the central coast of Peru from 1000-1450 AD.

Remains have been found at the top of the Gran Piramide (Great Pyramid) and belong to individual tombs. They were found in a sitting posture looking towards the southeast, wrapped in textiles, basketworks and ropes, and covered with bedrolls and offerings such as matte pottery vases and several textiles activity-related objects (needles, balls of thread, textiles, among others).

So far the find has bolstered the belief that part of the upper level of the pyramid has been used to bury elite people.

“This discovery is very important to learn more about the history of ancient Peru, as it provides new data on culture, and way of life of Miraflores’ first inhabitants. For this reason, the Municipality remains committed towards protecting and promoting such historical, cultural heritage site,” Miraflores Mayor Jorge Muñoz Wells said.

There may be new information to report as the search of the remains continues, announced Isabel Flores, Director of Huaca Pucllana on-site museum.
