The Foreign Ministers of Peru, Carlos Espá, and Ecuador, Roberto Kury Pesantes, kick off the 18th Peruvian-Ecuadorian Neighborhood Commission in Lima, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address the shared priorities of both countries.
During his remarks, the Peruvian Foreign Minister highlighted the maturity of the bilateral relationship and the importance of enhancing institutional coordination and joint efforts against transnational organized crime.
Furthermore, Foreign Minister Espá expressed his confidence that the technical committees would yield concrete results from the Quito 2025 Action Plan, to the benefit of border communities.
"I am convinced that the agreements emerging from this 18th meeting of the Neighborhood Commission will make a valuable contribution to strengthening our strategic partnership, improving the well-being of our populations, and further deepening the historic bonds of brotherhood that unite our nations," emphasized Foreign Minister Espá.
The ceremony took place at the Carlos García Bedoya building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the objective of evaluating progress on the Quito 2025 Action Plan and establishing new work commitments for 2026. The official proceedings included the participation of authorities from border regions and representatives from the private sector.
Key objectives prioritized by both countries include combating illegal mining, protecting shared water resources, strengthening border integration, and interconnecting the electrical grids of Peru and Ecuador.
Additionally, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, will meet with the President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, this Tuesday, October 20.
Both leaders will preside over the Presidential Meeting and the 17th Binational Cabinet, during which they will sign a Presidential Declaration and adopt the Lima 2026 Action Plan.
The Neighborhood Commission, established in 1998 following the peace agreements between the two nations, serves as a forum for bilateral integration and cooperation.
Its work includes approving action plans and coordinating initiatives through five binational technical committees, which cover social, productive, environmental, border, and security matters, among others.
