Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa highlighted the importance of artisanal fisheries and aquaculture for Peru during the Second Ocean Conference organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

In his speech, Mr. Landa affirmed that artisanal fisheries and aquaculture provide the livelihood for more than 45,000 fishermen in the country.

In addition, he highlighted the Peruvian initiatives promoting the economic improvement of small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture activities, such as the A Comer Pescado (Let's Eat Fish) program and the development of food products such as anchovy protein concentrate.

During the conference, the high-ranking official opened a side event organized by Peru —with the support of FAO, Sweden, and Norway— on the "International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022."

Within the framework of the meeting, the Peruvian minister was elected —by acclamation— as Vice-President of the UN Ocean Conference.

The Second UN Ocean Conference is co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal and will be held in the Portuguese city of Lisbon between June 27 and July 1.

The Conference is the most relevant intergovernmental platform to discuss maritime and oceanic issues.

Furthermore, it comes at a critical time as the world is strengthening its efforts to mobilize, create, and drive solutions to realize the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
