Economy and Finance Minister Maria Antonieta Alva has reported that her portfolio is taking plenty of measures to speed up public investment and generate employment in Peru.

The minister affirmed that many programs are going through difficult moments and that soup kitchens need to be supplied with food so as to serve Peruvians in difficult times.

"In this sense, S/17 million (around US$4.9 million) was allocated to finance the purchase of cleaning kits and other S/22 million (around US$6.3 million) to markets," Alva expressed.

In addition, she said S/300 million (around US$86.9 million) has been transferred to the incentive plan for municipalities.

"This is flexible money that can be used to strengthen their institutions. Besides, there is a S/222 million (US$64.3 million) budget for food baskets," she stated.

The government official emphasized that support is needed to control markets and soup kitchens.

"We need support for food purchases," Alva said as she addressed the Congress' Commission on Decentralization, Regionalization, Local Governments and Modernization of State Management.

Additionally, the Cabinet member commented that the Ministry of Economy and Finance is aware of the fall in (municipal) budgets. The first transfer totaled S/311 million (US$90 million) and "we will be collecting information until June 20 to finance public services up to the end of the year."

Moreover, the high-ranking official noted that the incentive plan for municipalities to combat COVID-19 was adapted by Urgency Decree No. 047.
