FA Ministry assists in repatriation of Peruvian deceased in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it is providing support and necessary information to the family of Jose Avila Tuanama, the Peruvian citizen who died in Ukraine while serving in that country's armed forces.

In a statement released on Friday, it specified that Maria Magdalena Avila, sister of the deceased, was received at the Ministry's Sub-directorate for Assistance to Nationals on May 29.

She was provided with updated information on the scope of the assistance and the procedure to be followed to ensure the prompt repatriation of her family member.

It also indicated that, upon learning of this sensitive news, the Directorate for Assistance to Nationals contacted the family of the deceased Peruvian by phone on Wednesday May 28. They confirmed that he had died between May 23 and 24 during patrol duties.

"After expressing heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Lola Avila and her family, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered its assistance for the repatriation of Jose Avila Tuanama," the communiqué stated.

Additional actions

The Ministry reported having contacted Ukraine's Ambassador to Peru and its Consul based in Lima to obtain information on the procedures for repatriating the body.

The Consular Section of Peru in Warsaw was requested to carry out procedures to officially confirm the death, an essential requirement for repatriation.

"Both the Consular Section in Warsaw and the Honorary Consulate of Peru in Ukraine have reported that they had carried out the requested procedures and are awaiting a response from Ukrainian authorities," the Peruvian government agency stated.

Lastly, it affirmed that it will continue providing support to Avila's family and reaffirmed its commitment to assisting our nationals, a fundamental pillar of Peru's foreign policy.
