Exports of cocoa and derivatives grew by 57.4% in 2014 after registering an amount of US$247.4 million, thanks to Europe's higher demand, mainly that of the Netherlands and Belgium, informed Peru's Exporters Association (Adex).

"Although cocoa has a great future, we should consider the foreign markets are applying demanded phytosanitary measures, which can have an impact on shipments that are sent abroad," said Giannina Denegri, head of the agriculture section at Adex.

Denegri also informed there is a working group created to promote the consumption of Peruvian chocolate at a national and international level. It is intended to keep the favorable growth rhythm up.

In 2014, the Netherlands was the main market destination of Peruvian cocoa and its derivatives, accounting for 22% of the total shipments. It registered an increase of 103.1%.

United States was the second destination (US$39.1million), with a light growth of 13.9%.

Belgium was the third one (US$27.2million) with an expansion of 105%. It is followed by Germany (US$20.2 million), Italy, Spain, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Canada, Panama, among others.

It should be noted in 2014, new markets as Estonia, India, Gambia and Luxembourg joined the list of cocoa importing countries.

Denegri confirmed there were 94 countries demanding Peruvian cocoa.

Regarding its derivatives exported from Peru are: Cocoa butter, chocolates, cocoa paste, cocoa powder, ice cream, cocoa peel, and cocoa oil.
