The European Parliament expressed its support for the democratic and constitutional order of Peru, the
Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
The government agency reported on the statement of the aforementioned international organization via social media.
Likewise, the document confirms the European parliamentarians' desire for Peruvian authorities to act responsibly and strengthen democracy.
In this sense, the European Parliament calls for general elections to be held as early as possible to overcome the political impasse.
Context and background
The text of the agreement also indicates that democratic and constitutional order "was threatened by now former President Pedro Castillo and his allies when he attempted to illegally dissolve Congress on December 7, 2022, in order to avoid his own impeachment."
Moreover, the European Parliament expresses its "hope that the impeccable and responsible behavior of Peruvian authorities will only strengthen democracy in the country."
This position is expressed at a time when protest mobilizations of forces opposed to the Government are being carried out in Peru.
